Tomoe Yokoi or Laurent Schkolnyk.

Kyu-Baik Hwang is one of the most noted artists in the Saper Galleries collection.  With Tomoe Yokoi he had a major exhibition with us in 1988.

Hwang was born in Pusan, Korea in 1932.  In 1968 he traveled throughout Europe, stopping in Paris where he studied intaglio printmaking with S.W. Hayter at his workshop, Atelier 17.

In Hwang's fascinating mezzotints, familiar objects -- a flower, a stone, perhaps a bird -- achieve a mystical personality that sets them apart from their everyday connotations.  Though not precisely surrealistic, Hwang's beautiful images, taken out of context and isolated, are at once superbly executed.

Using a combination of intaglio processes, Hwang mezzotints the central image areas only, so that the background appears light, unlike the typical mezzotint look.

Hwang has been honored with more than 50 one-man and group shows in recent years.  He has received awards at all the prestigious print invitationals and his prints are in numerous museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Musee d'Art Moderne (Paris), British Museum (London), Victoria and Albert Museum (London), Albertina (Vienna), Uffizi (Florence), Art Institute of Chicago, Brooklyn Museum, Museum of Fine Arts (Boston).

Perhaps you may enjoy having one in your collection!?
