"As a sculptor, I have always felt a connectedness and closeness to the natural materials of the earth.  Native toVargas now on display Michigan's northland are materials like clay, ore, and hardwoods.  They are intrinsic media in my sculpture-making.  Working relationships with these materials has made moving from an urban setting to Michigan's north country a natural transition.  My home and studio are located north of Petoskey near flowing streams in the foothills of Air Mountain.  This multi-sensory environment is complementary to my work as a sculptor.  When walking this landscape, nature's shapes and forms constantly change as one changes vantage points.

"My sculptural process initiates from a series of figurative drawings, to the making of a maquette, and concluding in the form being cast in bronze or carved in wood.  Within each sculpture I strive to create a sense of balance and harmony.  Whether the individual piece is more abstract or more figurative, the observer should take time to view it from multiple vantage points to draw his own interpretations and conclusions.  As with landscape, positive and negative space interplay, and shape and form change depending upon one's perspective." -- Paul Varga
