Artist
Jean-Michel Mathieux-Marie was born in Paris in
1947. He was introduced to me by famed French
mezzotint artist Laurent Schkolnyk and I was quite
impressed with the delicate, impressive mastery of the
engraving medium with subjects related to classic
architecture which he studied at École des Beaux-Arts in
Paris, graduating in 1972. By 1978 he pursued print-making, specializing in drypoint engravings. In 1984, Jean-Michel executed his first pastels, in Madrid at the Casa Velázquez, where he was studying on a grant from the city of Paris. Other distinctions include the Prix Paul-Louis Weiller as awarded by the Académie des Beaux-Arts, and the Grand Prix du Salon des Artistes Français, among others. He has also illustrated many books by writers including Michel Déon, Federico Garcia Lorca, Julien Gracq and Francis Ponge. The artist's delicate engravings are made by preparing the metal plate and drawing the image onto it using a sharp needle-like tool, inking it and printing it on a very thin paper which is bonded to the thicker and larger size backing paper when in the printing press, a technique called chine-collé. Jean-Michel's imagery is generally of European architectural scenes with elements of fantasy with subtle surreal aspects. Enjoy these exquisite, delicate, architectural portraits so beautifully created by French artist Jean-Michel Mathieux-Marie. We are pleased to introduce them to the friends of Saper Galleries! ~
