Paul Varga at Saper Galleries, 2024
Artist Paul Varga with his sculptures at Saper Galleries

Paul Varga, with two art degrees from Central Michigan University, retired art teacher from four high schools throughout the State of Michigan, is a master sculptor with a studio in northern Michigan.  Enjoy the pedestal size and large scale bronzes on display now at Saper Galleries.

Varga was featured as one of the 10 Michigan artists in the exhibition The Saper Galleries Michigan Collection: Artists From the Great Lakes State.

"Each of my sculptures originates and evolves from the human figure.  The sculptures are intended to be 3-dimensional metaphors that represent the individual or collective strength of mankind and portray a sense of humanity.  Within each piece I strive to create a sense of balance and harmony.  My sculptural process begins with drawings from a life model.  After an evolutionary sequence of drawings is completed, a maquette is made in clay or plaster.  Using this 3D model for reference, a sculpture is then carved in a hard wood.  Selected wood sculptures are cast in bronze."

"Influences on my sculptural direction include Alexander Archipenko, Constantin Brancusi, Jaques Lipchitz, Aristide Maillol and Henry Moore. The many works of these sculptors as well as the Cubism movement in early 20th century sculpture are most inspirational. My sculptures throughout the years have vacillated in style between forms that are more stylized and figurative to pieces that are biomorphic abstractions."

Should you enjoy one of the sculptures below but want it in a very large size for an outdoor installation (as shown above), call us and we will have it made larger for you!

Enjoy the solid and emotive bronzes of one of today's leading sculptors, Michigan's Paul Varga.

"As a sculptor, I have always felt a connectedness and closeness to the natural materials of the earth.  Native toVargas now on display Michigan's northland are materials like clay, ore, and hardwoods.  They are intrinsic media in my sculpture-making.  Working relationships with these materials has made moving from an urban setting to Michigan's north country a natural transition.  My home and studio are located north of Petoskey near flowing streams in the foothills of Air Mountain.  This multi-sensory environment is complementary to my work as a sculptor.  When walking this landscape, nature's shapes and forms constantly change as one changes vantage points.

"My sculptural process initiates from a series of figurative drawings, to the making of a maquette, and concluding in the form being cast in bronze or carved in wood.  Within each sculpture I strive to create a sense of balance and harmony.  Whether the individual piece is more abstract or more figurative, the observer should take time to view it from multiple vantage points to draw his own interpretations and conclusions.  As with landscape, positive and negative space interplay, and shape and form change depending upon one's perspective." -- Paul Varga
