It is my pleasure to introduce to
you a recent addition to the Saper Galleries glass
collection, the hand-blown glass vessels created by
New York State artist Tom Stoenner. I met Tom at an exhibition in Philadelphia in early 2014 and was immediately attracted to the luminescent and iridescent qualities of his glass. The light creates a scintillating excitement in each of his beautifully designed vases as you can see in the photos below and even more so in person. Tom has hand blown glass for more than three decades in his scenic Hudson Valley studio. The crucible in his cast ceramic furnace holds 170 pounds of molten glass the consistency of honey. To create the vases you see below he dips a long steel pipe into the molten glass, gathering the hot and glowing glass and manipulating it with various tools, all while turning the pipe, spending an hour or more adding more glass, reheating it, and bringing shape to the layers of glass. The iridescent vases have five to seven layers of powdered color and chips and threads of clear glass on the outside and a titanium luster which makes them glow. After the design is completed the glass sets in an oven for a day at 1,400 degrees Fahrenheit. Tom made for me -- and for you to enjoy -- the selection of glass you see below. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. ~ Roy Saper |
